The rewarding work of a drug treatment

i’ve worked in a drug treatment centers for 17 years. it’s been the most rewarding work i have ever done. ironically, it may have been why i was put on this planet. i was an addict for almost twenty years. it wasn’t until i went into a drug treatment center myself, as a patient, that i realized how much drug addiction treatment would become a part of my life. how does one go from being an addict to being a counselor at one of the best private residential drug treatment centers in the world? well, i’ll tell you… once i stopped being a slave to drugs… once i totally bought into what drug treatment and recovery were all about… once i started really living my life… it was then that i realized i had the experience to help. who better to help addicts recover from addiction than another addict. you should see the light come on in peoples eyes when i tell them “yes, i have been there.” it’s the best feeling in the world and i have the best job in the world. i get to work in Malibu, ca. i get to see people get their lives back, get a second shot at life. and most importantly, i wake up every day happy that i have recovered from my drug abuse and that i am a solid contributing member of the drug treatment community.
